Founding of CLE in USA, 2014

Established in 2014 in collaboration with the Commercial Law Development Program (CLDP) of the United States Department of Commerce, the Continuing Legal Education Institute of (CLEI) was founded to advance legal education, professional training, and institutional capacity building For relevant stakeholders and institutions.

Through its partnership with CLDP, a global initiative dedicated to strengthening legal and commercial frameworks worldwide, CLEI has developed a distinctive tech-enabled platform that connects legal professionals with Internationally recognized faculty, contemporary legal practice, emerging global developments, and globally recognized accreditations.

Since 2014, CLEI and CLDP have jointly organized and conducted a wide range of training programs, workshops, and professional development initiatives throughout Pakistan. These programs have focused on key areas including competition law, intellectual property law, ADR, IP licensing, and the development of continuing legal education infrastructure.

Over the years, CLEI has contributed significantly to strengthening the legal profession by fostering professional excellence, enhancing institutional knowledge, and promoting continuous legal learning for lawyers, judges, academics, and policymakers.

2.  Competition Law CLE Program

Description

In close coordination with CLDP, CLEI organized a competition law continuing legal education (CLE) program in Karachi, Pakistan. The conference addressed the role of the Competition Commission of Pakistan (CCP) in levelling the playing field for business, covering deceptive marketing practices, competitive advertising, brand vulnerability, vertical agreements, relevant markets, and abuse of dominance. CLDP provided two experts from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and brought together 75 participants from government agencies, international corporations, private law firms, and consumer rights groups. CLE was new to Pakistan at this stage. CLDP and CLEI also co-designed the next CLE program, focused on intellectual property rights, planned for Islamabad in April 2015.

5.  CLDP Conducts IP Judicial Workshop with CLE

On December 4-5, CLEI, in close cooperation with USPTO and CLDP, held an intellectual property (IP) workshop in Karachi, Pakistan, for IP Tribunal Presiding Officers and select District and Session Court (D&S) judges identified as likely to be assigned to IP Tribunals in the near future (a total of 15 participants). The workshop focused on enhancing the knowledge and analytical skills of the participants when applying IP law to cases before the IP Tribunals and D&S courts. U.S. Federal District Court Judge David Carter and Lahore High Court Justice Farrukh Irfan Khan led numerous panel discussions with active participation by the Tribunal and D&S judges, supplemented by teaching sessions on copyright and trademark law. At the conclusion of the workshop, the participants gained an increased understanding of the legal and economic underpinning IP law and global best practices which will enhance the tribunal/court's effectiveness in adjudicating civil and criminal claims to protect IP rights holders from the unauthorized use of IP and the resulting damages to individuals, the economy, and society as a whole.

On September 25-27, in Karachi Pakistan, CLEI, in close cooperation with USPTO and CLDP, conducted an intellectual property (IP) workshop in Karachi, Pakistan, for IP Tribunal Presiding Officers and select District and Session Court (D&S) judges. This workshop was the second in a series of three workshops focusing on enhancing the knowledge and analytical skills of the participants when applying Pakistan IP law to cases before the IP Tribunals and D&S courts. 7.  CLDP and CLE conducts IP Judicial Workshop Phase III

From December 3-7, 2018, CLEI, in partnership with USPTO and CLDP, conducted a week-long workshop on intellectual property (IP) for Pakistan judges and a Director of the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO). This workshop was the capstone training session in a series of progressively more difficult programs for IP Tribunal Presiding Officers and District & Sessions judges selected by the High Courts as likely to be appointed to IP Tribunals in the near future. The judges interacted with U.S. (e.g., USPTO, DOJ, judges, private lawyers) and Pakistani (e.g., private legal practitioners) experts in trademark, copyright, trade secret, and patent law, including civil and criminal prosecution and deterrent sentencing. The workshop was a mix of subject matter lectures, case studies, and a visit to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. In addition, representatives of U.S. industry and an economist met with the judges to discuss the benefits and challenges of enforcing intellectual property rights locally, nationally, regionally, and worldwide. This series of workshops builds on earlier CLDP, USPTO, CLEI, and IPO programs focusing on IP rights in Pakistan.
